Case study

Maze, Planning Solutions

Travelodge Hotel, Station Lane, Durham City

Project Overview

MAZE was commissioned in May 2004 to monitor 3rd party proposals for a student housing development on this central Durham site. The scheme had met with local hostility and was ultimately refused by the City Council, whose preference was to retain the land as open space.

MAZE subsequently played the lead role in successful promotion of proposals for a 39-bed hotel for Travelodge as an annex to the company's established business, situated in an adjacent listed building. The scheme required careful handling to overcome resistance in principle to development of the site and address detailed design issues because of proximity to the listed building and visibility from the Durham Cathedral & Castle World Heritage Site. Permission was granted in March 2006 and construction completed in December 2006. The City Council is reported to be extremely pleased with the resulting building.
